Categories Filed: 'Welcome to the Rileys'This year’s Deauville American Film Festival will be a fete of first films with seven of 11 titles in the Competition debut features, organizers said Thursday. The Sundance fest will shine down on Deauville this year as Diego Luna’s “Abel,” Rodrigo Cortes’ “Buried,” Kevin Asch’s “Holy Rollers,” Ryan Piers Williams’ “The Dry Land,” Jay and Mark Duplass’ “Cyrus,” Jack Scott’s “Welcome to the Rileys” and that festival’s big winner Debra Granik’s “Winter’s Bone” host their French premieres in the Gallic seaside town after runs in Park City. David Robert Mitchell’s “The Myth of the American Sleepover” will also follow screenings at SXSW and the Festival de Cannes Critics Week sidebar with a Deauville slot. Cannes Director’s Fortnight title Alistair Banks Griffin’s “Two Gates of Sleep” will also reopen its eyes to screen in Competition in Deauville. Derrick Borte’s “The Joneses” starring Demi Moore and David Duchovny plus Rodrigo Garcia’s “Mother and Child” with Annette Bening, Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson and Jimmy Smits will add A-list weight to the lineup. Joining Emmanuelle Beart for her Competition jury are French actress Jeanne Balibar, director-screenwriter-actor Lucas Belvaux, director and screenwriter Faouzi Bensaidi, director-writer-actress Christine Citti, director and screenwriter Fabrice du Welz, director and screenwriter Tony Gatlif, director, screenwriter Abderrahmane Sissako and actor Denis Lavant. Categories Filed: 'Welcome to the Rileys'If the ”Twilight: Eclipse” premiere was the tough ticket of this year’s L.A. Film Festival, drawing roughly 5,000 fans from all corners of the U.S. in order to get a glimpse of Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner at the Nokia Theater, then ”Welcome to the Rileys” proved to be damn near impossible. Kristen Stewart fans gambled on the ability to sit less than ten feet away from the star inside one of the smaller Regal Cinemas at L.A. Live, but having to contend with the fact that seven of the 15 rows in the theater were already roped off for VIPs of one kind or another. LAFF director Rebecca Yeldham came out to introduce the film and moderate the post-screening Q & A (a job usually handled by programmers or volunteers), and before the film started, Melissa Leo spoke on behalf of herself and co-stars Stewart and James Gandolfini, who stood off to the side, a reminder that “Welcome to the Rileys” not only boasts a talented ensemble, but one of the most spotlight-weary as well. For those who have been following the film’s distribution drama since Sundance, it was unveiled with a brand spankin’ new Samuel Goldwyn/Destination Films logo in front, replacing Apparition as the distributor, who will bring the film to theaters in October. But the real drama was on screen, with the idiosyncratic tale of a wholesale plumbing supply salesman (Gandolfini) who attempts to drown his sorrows in the Big Easy during a trade show and encounters a stripper/prostitute (Stewart) who reminds him of his late daughter who died in an accident. Leo plays Gandolfini’s distant wife. Gandolfini, Stewart, Leo, writer Ken Hixon and producer Michael Costigan took to the front of the theater to discuss the origins of the film. Naturally, Stewart received the bulk of the questions, being asked in particular about playing a role so different than her most famous creation in “Twilight.” • Read full story… RELATED POSTS:

Apparition and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group have finalized their acquisition of Kristen Stewart-James Gandolfini starrer “Welcome to the Rileys,” which bowed at Sundance. A seven-figure deal for North American rights closed Friday. Jake Scott-helmed drama was produced by Scott’s father Ridley and uncle Tony’s shingle Scott Free, and the pic was penned by Ken Hixon. Story revolves around a couple, played by Gandolfini and Leo, whose marriage is on the rocks when the husband meets a young prostitute, played by Leo, on a business trip to New Orleans. He extends his stay to help her, as his wife finds a way back to him. • Read full story… RELATED POSTS:

EXCLUSIVE: It’s been weeks since the Sundance Film Festival. But Bob Berney’s Apparition has teamed with the Sony Worldwide Acquisitions Group to acquire domestic distribution rights to Welcome to the Rileys, the Jake Scott-directed Ken Hixon-written drama that stars James Gandolfini, Kristen Stewart, and Melissa Leo. Apparition is eyeing a fall distribution slot. I’m told the deal was 7 figures with a P&A commitment. The Scott Free/Argonaut-produced film made its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January and created strong buzz, particularly among fans of Twilight star Stewart. Some of them sent email missives to distribution executives, urging them to make a deal and get the film into theaters. The UTA Independent Film Group repped the film. • Read full story… RELATED POSTS:
