One should always be a little wary of a film that was shot three years before its release date. Sure, some movies merely take awhile to get through the production pipeline but when it’s an independent drama like The Yellow Handkerchief, it probably means something is wrong. This character piece features three interesting performances but they’re all fighting against a screenplay that values cliché over believability and a director who can’t find the right rhythm or tone for the piece. What’s most jarring about The Yellow Handkerchief is that it never feels like anything but a movie with its characters who constantly say what they’re feeling and doing and it never once feels genuine or organic. Stars William Hurt and, to a lesser but still notable extent, Kristen Stewart elevate this material well above what it was on the page and the cinematography of a post-Katrina Louisiana by the always-great Chris Menges (The Reader, The Mission) is remarkably good, but The Yellow Handkerchief never comes together. • Read full story…

It’s been weeks and weeks since the Sundance Film Festival. But Bob Berney’s Apparition has teamed with the Sony Worldwide Acquisitions Group to acquire domestic distribution rights to Welcome to the Rileys, the Jake Scott-directed Ken Hixon-written drama that stars James Gandolfini, Kristen Stewart, and Melissa Leo. Apparition is eyeing a fall distribution slot. I’m told the deal was 7 figures with a P&A commitment.

The Scott Free/Argonaut-produced film made its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January and created strong buzz, particularly among fans of Twilight star Stewart. Some of them sent email missives to distribution executives, urging them to make a deal and get the film into theaters. The UTA Independent Film Group repped the film.

Gandolfini and Leo play a couple whose marriage becomes a wreck following the death of their teenage daughter. On a business trip to New Orleans, the husband finds himself drawn to an underage prostitute, insinuating himself as her platonic guardian. Jake Scott made his feature directing debut, and Ridley and Tony Scott, Scott Free president Michael Costigan and Steve Zaillian on its producing roster.

It was the second significant deal for a Sundance film made by UTA Independent after the festival ended. The first was a Sony Pictures Classics acquisition of U.S. and Latin American rights to Animal Kingdom, the David Michod-directed film that won the fest’s World Cinema Jury Prize.

UTA Independent also brokered a distribution deal for the Ryan Reynolds film Buried, with Lionsgate closing the deal hours after the film’s midnight premiere.

So how much of a role did Jodie Foster have in getting a then-largely undiscovered Kristen Stewart her part in “The Yellow Handkerchief?”

Producer Arthur Cohn told journalists that Foster “urged” him to sign the pre-”Twilight” Stewart for the movie which only just opened in theaters on Friday.

“Nobody wanted me to take (Stewart) in the part of Martine, she was practically an unknown,” Cohn told the press at “The Yellow Handkerchief’s” press day. “But Jodie Foster, a close friend, urged me to take her.”

“So I took her.”

He repeated the same thoughts in the film’s official press notes which state that Foster “recommended” Stewart for the part. “I followed Jodie’s advice because she’s a great actress and director,” Cohn is quoted as saying in the notes. • Read full story…

It may be a bit jarring to see Kristen Stewart so far away from Forks, but at least her new co-star is best friends with Rob Pattinson! Eddie Redmayne and Kristen team up in The Yellow Handkerchief, a film about a road trip through post-Katrina New Orleans. In the movie, Kristen hops in a car with two strangers… and the rest you’ll just have to see for yourself!

What made you want to play this part?
Kristen: When I read the script it was one of those things that you get really excited about and then instantly really sick because you’re not sure that you’ve got the part. I was sort of undeniably emotionally moved by it and I think just regarding the person that I played, she makes such a comeback. I feel like in the beginning she’s so clearly disappointed in everything around her and that first time you see her she’s rejected and that’s what she’s running from.

Can you identify with the whole teenage runaway attitude that you have in the film?
Kristen: I feel like [running away] was so not thought out. It’s a pretty courageous thing to do to get in that car. And especially for a young girl, it can be considered silly. But I can identify with her in that she is doing something that is dangerous but that will ultimately be absolutely worth it. I can absolutely relate to that. • Read full story…

Imagine the difficulty in trying to capture true romance onscreen. Think about how difficult it would be to construct a love story that millions would identify with as true to their own experiences, one that hordes of people would believe will last forever, one that will find the truth of a lifetime of companionship, all in about 90 minutes. For every “Titanic” or “The Notebook,” there are dozens of clunkers featuring actors with no chemistry, clichéd scenes that show no signs of true soulmate-bonding and countless dollars lost by audience members who enter the theater looking for love and leave with nothing but disappointment.

To many in her generation, “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart is one-half of the greatest love story that exists in cinema. Now she returns this week with “The Yellow Handkerchief,” a film that shows remarkable skill in depicting both a grown-up romance (featuring an ex-con played by William Hurt and his old flame played by Maria Bello) and a tale of teenage innocence (depicting a shy boy played by Eddie Redmayne and a mysterious wild child in Stewart). So when we caught up with Kristen recently, we had to ask: What’s the secret to making a great romantic movie? • Read full story…

Kristen in a beautiful, quiet moment at our interview.
Lynn BarkerBefore the “Twilight” phenomenon, a just turned 17-year-old Kristen Stewart was in the post-Katrina New Orleans area filming a sensitive, warm and romantic road trip film called The Yellow Handkerchief in which she plays a beautiful but rejected-by-guys teen ready for a new adventure in life.

At her side in the film is a very cute Brit actor named Eddie Redmayne (of The Other Boleyn Girl) who was surprised to be cast as a quirky, vagabond young American guy from Oklahoma!

These two share a few kisses in the film and were both nervous and anxious to do their “getting-to-know-you” scenes justice. We wanted to know which scenes intimidated Kristen and what she learned from bigtime actor William Hurt on the project.

Why were she and Eddie worried about their final kiss in the movie? You’ll find out.

Kristen told us that she didn’t get to party in New Orleans because she was very underage (you might feel her pain). • Read full story…

With the opening frame of celluloid, I was immediately drawn to THE YELLOW HANDKERCHIEF thanks to the elegant beauty of the cinematography before me. Spellbinding, I visually plunged headfirst into the willows, wetlands and marshes of the deep South, the crystalline clarity of the world after the raging violence of a heat induced thunderstorm, and the intricately interwoven character study and story of love, loss, redemption and second chances that parallel nature’s own mysteries and wonders. On learning the visual imagery capturing my attention was the work of cinematographer Chris Menges, I was not surprised at the hypnotic cinematographic appeal as Menges is one of the finest technical artisans in the business. Adding to this was the fact that THE YELLOW HANDKERCHIEF is based on a beautiful short story by the acclaimed Pete Hamill and stars William Hurt and Maria Bello. • Read full story…
