The duo tells us exactly what they think about Twilight fans and rock’n'roll fantasies.

The Runaways is about many things, but perhaps most importantly, it’s about the connection between Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, whose friendship boosted the band into short-lived stardom. Twenty-five years after they first jammed in a cramped trailer in the Valley, Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning—the duo who plays them in Floria Sigismondi’s debut film, out this Friday—are filling their platform shoes, both onscreen and off. We caught up with the duo to learn how they first bonded and whether we can expect a solo album anytime soon.

How did you get into character—especially when it came to singing and performing the songs?
Dakota Fanning: [Singing] was something that I was a little bit nervous about, something that I’ve always been self-conscious about. So I was really excited to do it, because I knew I couldn’t have done it any other way—I just would have felt weird about [lip-synching].
Kristen Stewart: Luckily I had Joan [Jett] on set every day. There’s a lot of stuff on the internet that you can look at, there’s a lot of photos, and there’s a little bit of footage, so we really did need Joan and Cherie there in order not to tell a completely superficial—I would feel like a little doll walking around with black hair, I wouldn’t feel like I was actually playing Joan.

I was just talking to Joan, and she was saying how similar you are in so many ways.
KS: I think she thinks we’re incredibly similar, because I just played her in a movie. It’s so funny, because when we see each other now, I’m pointing out the differences. I’m like, See, I don’t normally do that!

A writer described this film as “cautionary”; do you think of The Runaways in that way?
KS: I think the whole “cautionary tale” thing is really something that only older people look at this movie and say. It’s a success story on both sides; to see two people choose different paths, one of them being really successful, and the other just doing what she needed to do to be happy. [Cherie Currie] clearly knows herself fairly well, it was a really strong bold thing to give up something that you love. They needed to go through that or else they wouldn’t be who they were. It’s not a cautionary tale, it’s not like, “Ohhh…drugs are really scary, kids, don’t get famous and go crazy!” I really don’t think it’s about that at all. If it is, that’s the last thing I was thinking about.

Did you mine any experiences from your teenage years to tap into that angst and aggression?
KS: I have a lot of aggression, it wasn’t hard.
DF: I don’t think I can compare anything I went through to what Cherie went through.

So who is the better kisser: Edward Cullen or Cherie Currie? ‘Cherie, yeah,’ she laughs.

While playing various roles, Kristen Stewart has had the opportunity to share onscreen kisses with both Robert Pattinson’s Edward Cullen in the “Twilight” movies and Dakota Fanning’s Cherie Currie in their new girl-power rock flick, “The Runaways.” So we obviously had to ask: Who is the better kisser?

We caught up with a dazzling, Pucci minidress-clad Stewart on the red carpet for the New York premiere of “The Runaways” and she gave us the answer. “Cherie, yeah,” she laughed.

Stewart talked to us a few months ago about the kissing scene and went into a bit more detail, saying that sharing an onscreen kiss with Fanning didn’t really faze her all that much. “It was never a big deal to me either … especially the way it was written into the story and the way it wasn’t, ‘And they finally get together,’ ” she explained about the kiss, which in the film acted as an extension of their friendship and their “bond” as bandmates.

“It’s like, it was just one night, and they have such an awesome bond that’s so cool to observe,” she added. “So the fact that they made out when they were teenagers has nothing to do with it.”

Fanning also didn’t think kissing Stewart mattered all that much. “I don’t think it was ever a big deal to me,” Fanning, who plays Runaways lead singer Cherie Currie, explained, adding that having Cherie and Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) kiss in the film “was just a thing, another day” for the close characters.

Stewart co-stars as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning gets the role of lead singer Cherie Currie in the real-life story of the all-girl band that made music history. “I think my generation doesn’t really know what The Runaways was. I didn’t, even though I was aware of Joan Jett. She’s a legend, so it was a big deal not only to meet her, but to have her on the set. The main thing that Joan talked about was just how much she cared about that period of her life because it jump-started her entire career. The Runaways was one of the first all-girl bands, so it’s an incredibly triumphant, feminist story. Joan became my friend and I was thinking about all she stood for and going, ‘Oh God, now I have to do her justice.’”

“I was really concerned about getting the music right because The Runaways have a very distinctive sound. It’s not just singing, it’s trying to sound like them. I wasn’t lip-synching. I worked hard to get like that growl that Joan does when she’s performing. I’m not saying that I did it perfectly, but I gave it my best. And I learned to play the guitar because I didn’t want to fake it.”

Meeting Dakota Fanning again in the Twilight zone.
“We really bonded on The Runaways. I’m really looking forward to the three days that she’s probably going to be filming Breaking Dawn. It’s weird to see her in the Twilight setting because it’s usually the same cast of people. But, suddenly, there was Dakota. The first time I saw her in her wardrobe as Jane, on Eclipse, which was not too far after we finished The Runaways, it was bizarre as all hell.”
